What a course gives you
Order. A ready sequence of topics: no deciding what to learn after what. For an absolute beginner that's the main value.
Discipline. A schedule, deadlines, and money you'd hate to waste. It works better than you'd think.
Feedback. On good courses a human reads your code and tells you what's wrong. That's the most valuable part and, sadly, the rarest.
People around you. Coursemates to ask and to measure yourself against.
What a course doesn't give you
Practice at solving problems unaided. While you're led through a handbook you don't learn to start from a blank file. And that's exactly what the job requires.
Differentiation from other graduates. Thousands hold the same certificate with the same projects.
A guaranteed job. Employment promises usually turn out to be help with a CV and a mailing list, not a position.
What self-study gives you
The ability to figure things out. The main advantage. From day one you learn to find answers, read documentation and climb out of dead ends — precisely what the job consists of.
Your own pace and problems. You can go deep where it's interesting and skip weeks on what you already understand.
No cost. There are enough free materials for the entire route.
What self-study lacks
Order. It's easy to get stuck in video marathons or, conversely, to scatter.
Feedback. You don't know whether your code is dreadful or fine. That slows you most of all.
Discipline. Without external obligations, a third of people drop out in month three.
What actually decides the outcome
Not the format, but two things:
- How much code you write yourself. Solving your own problems, not repeating after an author.
- Who reads your code. Anyone at all besides you.
There are people who took an expensive course and can't start from an empty file. And there are self-taught people who built four projects in a year and got hired. The difference isn't the format, it's those two points.
A sensible option for most people
A mix. Take one course or a structured free curriculum for the order, but from month one build your own things in parallel — not from the handbook.
And find somewhere to get feedback: communities, open source projects, working on a shared project with other people. The last covers feedback, discipline and team experience at once — none of which any course provides.
If you do take a course
Look at one thing: do live humans review your code and give substantive comments. Everything else is secondary. A course without work being reviewed is a set of videos you could find free.
